Foundation Update – July 2020

Foundation Update – July 2020

Deadline for COVID-19 Grant Applications Quickly Approaching
In April, the NEA Foundation annouced three grant opportunities to support public educators’ emerging needs in response to the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on teaching and learning. While the application period is now closed for Rapid Response Grants, educators can still apply for two additional grant opportunities for the 2020-21 school year.

Educators have until July 15 to submit applications for a COVID-19 Student Success Grant and Learning and Learning and Leadership. The Foundation seeks grant applications that focus on identifying and addressing pertinent educational equity and opportunity gaps exacerbated by the pandemic. These grants will be awarded in September 2020. To learn more about the two COVID-19 grants, please visit our website.

Global Learning Fellows Cohort Share Powerful Message of Solidarity During Pandemic
The final months of the 2019-2020 school year brought many challenges for educators teaching their students and keeping them engaged from home through a computer screen and other remote learning strategies. In an effort to lift the spirits of educators around the country, the 2020 Global Learning Fellowship cohort teamed up to create and share a video, “Dear Educators, Don’t Quit!” Many talked of their individual struggles, triumphs and advice on how to end the school year on a positive note.

2020 global learning mentor, Chris Gleason, who spear-headed the initiative, felt it was essential for the fellows to reflect about their experiences and encourage one another.

“The challenges we face due to COVID-19 are significant and unique to each of us. However, as educators, we share in the struggle to support and encourage our students in these difficult times,” Gleason said.

Awardees Selected for Student Success and Learning and Leadership Grants
The NEA Foundation has awarded new grants to 42 educators across the country from Alaska to Maine, as well as one educator who teaches at a school on a U.S. military base in Japan. The grants will help fund opportunities and projects that enhance educator expertise and student learning. Video Series Gives Voice to Challenges Educators Face From Pandemic
In June, the Foundation partnered with Education Week, one of the nation’s largest education news outlets, to share educator stories of how they adapted to online learning in face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the five part “Teaching in the Time of Coronavirus” video series, the Foundation-sponsored video features Russell Stahlke, an elementary school educator in Washington, who discusses the challenges education faced before the pandemic and the steps he believes should be taken now to get all students to an equitable place.
