The goal of this project is to increase reading proficiency in students by fostering a love of reading through the building of home libraries. This program would allow students to spend up to $6 every month for the entire school year to purchase books of interest to them through Scholastic, with additional money spent to enhance the classroom library with more Spanish and nonfiction selections. Eighty-eight percent of the students at Rachael’s school are eligible for free and reduced-priced lunch. Many of them have a small number of books in their home libraries. Through ownership and choice of books, a culture of and interest in reading will be nurtured through this project.
