For the past year educators at the K-2 Mount Daniel Elementary School have been working to implement new practices in their classrooms that are aligned to current research on foundational literacy skill acquisition. Specifically, they have been trained in several new methods to provide more systemic and explicit phonics instruction and they have been engaged in a related book study. They are hopeful that these methods will help them close the gaps for some of their lower-performing student groups, including English Language Learners, special education students, and students from low-income families, gaps that grew wider during the pandemic. With this grant, they will augment their decodable text library so that students have plenty of books to use as they experience these new teaching methods.
