This project will support students in becoming conscious consumers of information. Through an inquiry-based process, students will analyze visual texts (i.e. books, news articles, and maps) and learn to recognize perspectives by seeking information from multiple sources and points of view to develop an objective, balanced understanding of the world. They will also learn to carefully consider conflicts between two or more equally valid ideas when formulating their opinions. Students will learn about the definition of critical media literacy (i.e. to analyze media, audiences, and power) and the five characteristics of a good news report: fairness and balance; accuracy; attribution; brevity; and clarity.
