This project will bring into the classroom Geodes, a series of knowledge-building books to support instruction for emerging and developing readers. Lisa Hanfield and her colleagues will use the series to reinforce previously introduced, sequenced phonics concepts within the context of accessible, culturally diverse nonfiction and fiction texts aligned to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) along with the College/Career and Civic Life (C3) social studies concepts. As there are multiple copies of each text and specific teacher resources for each book, small groups of students will meet with a teacher for guided reading instruction utilizing these materials, ultimately facilitating deeper understanding of the world and the development of strategic, independent readers.
