This purpose of this project is to expand access to communication using alternative and augmentative technology (AAC or AT) for students served by speech-language pathologists and/or special education educators. These students may be preverbal due to varying circumstances such as a diagnosis of autism, developmental delay, cognitive delay and gross motor difficulties. The use of augmentative and alternative communication technologies align with the state’s standards and is crucial to enabling preverbal and nonverbal students the ability to participate in classroom activities and communicate with staff and peers. In addition to supporting the purchase of technology, the grant will also support expedient access to AAC trials and can help provide data necessary for recommendations of purchase of devices for individual students often covered by insurance/third parties.
