At Brooklyn New School/PS 146, approximately 100 3rd graders each year immerse themselves in a year-long theme of study on Africa, focusing one semester on West Africa and one on East Africa. With this grant, educators will experiment with some additions to their unit on West African cultures. One of the new ideas they will explore is a series of five virtual workshops with and one in-person visit to the New York Historical Society to explore techniques used to study the past, specifically African American history. The school will pursue partnerships and fundraising for any of these experiments which they find a compelling addition to their curriculum. PS 146 has been named a citywide “Showcase School,” hosting educators and administrators for visits and sharing their work virtually as a resource for others in the district so they will be able to share what they learn with others.
