In looking at the beginning of year phonic scores for students last year, Karen Helmer and her colleagues became very concerned that the scores for their 3rd grade students were significantly lower than in pre-pandemic years. After a root cause analysis and review of evidence-based practice, they concluded that they must fundamentally change their approach to phonics instruction to return scores to pre-pandemic levels. Through this project, they will support educators in building their knowledge of phonics best practices, provide coaching opportunities for educators, open up classrooms for observation and peer feedback, and bring in supportive materials to aid in phonics instruction
