This project will support the collaborative creation of a newsletter by students in Oakland, San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles Chinatowns. The goal is to have regular planning meetings and cowriting opportunities as well as publishing a fall and spring print issue of the newsletter which can be shared with family and friends. The issues will be focused on topics relevant to the Asian-American community such as #StopAsianHate, stories of immigration, short biographies of important figures, and reviews of films and movies which are not adequately represented in America. The intention is for it to be a bilingual publication, providing an opportunity for students in schools with primarily English Language Learners to practice their language skills in a low-stakes, collaborative, creative setting while being empowered to tell their stories and share them with their communities.
