As a way to bring an awareness to African history and culture, 1st-5th grade students will visit the Zimsculpt exhibit at the Peace River Botanical and Sculpture Gardens. Zimsculpt is a collection of over 100 African sculptures from the small village of Tengenenge in Zimbabwe, Africa. Two of the artists will relate historic and cultural stories to students and demonstrate
the arduous process of cutting stone. This field study experience will enable students to understand the significance of the exhibit and life in a small African village. The opportunity to see and experience this body of work will be used to teach students about a part of Black history and how hard work and vision has helped one community survive. Three integrated
activities will complete the visit as students discover life in Africa through art, math, and science.
