Elizabeth Anderton recently completed her certification in biophilic design (the practice of creating a closer connection to nature through the ways buildings and landscapes are created) as well as a certificate in horticulture therapy. She seeks to expand her knowledge in these areas by traveling to the Netherlands where, in a week’s time, she will be able to visit 6-10 exemplars of biophilic design, documenting ways they could be adapted for classrooms and other buildings in a K-12 setting. Recognizing that students and staff at schools have experienced a tremendous amount of stress over the past few years due to the pandemic and that there is a growing body of evidence documenting the important role that nature plays in the development of children and the health of all people, Elizabeth plans to use this knowledge to bring more nature into classrooms, the school environment and the curriculum in her school and district while also conducting research to contribute to this field.
