Classroom, special education, and intervention teachers in Hawley Public Schools are currently completing professional development in the science of reading through the technology-based literacy program, Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling). This research- based instructional program prepares teachers to use decodable and leveled reading text to build student reading skills based on brain science and the most efficient practices. This project will provide books that will be used for targeted outreach to meet the instructional needs of students. Educators will use the books to boost student reading success through connecting the skills taught with decodable readers to concepts in print. Success will be measured through the Accelerated Reader program using independent reading goals to assess students’ reading comprehension skills within their independent reading levels.
